Unique Late 16th/Early 17th Century Cast Iron Fire back with Biblical Scene

A rather unique cast iron fireback dating from the late 16th to early 17th century. Either German or Dutch of that period.

Depicts Jesus at the well of Jacob in Samaria with a woman Samaritan (John:4) The inscription reads "Von Der Frewlein Von Samaria Iohan4" The top section of the panel shows a well in the centre with the woman to the left and Jesus to the right. Then there is the inscription and then below that side portraits of possibly the original owners of the fireback? 

There is an extremely old crack in the middle at the bottom. Please study the pictures for full detail. We have not blacked this up just given it a brush to remove cobwebs and some dirt. Some rust marks in places and we can black it for you with blacking if you prefer.

You can find more information about this fireback on the website of Hodgers, item 357 under firebacks It is also mentioned in the book Plaques de cheminées by Henri Carpentier, a copy of which is held in the Victoria & Albert Museums library.

For Scotland and NI please get in touch for a shipping quote. We always use a fully insured courier but he is usually on his own, so please when you make arrangements with the him for delivery please make sure there is someone available to help him if required. Collection is usually well within 14 days of the order being placed and delivery is usually 8 to 10 days after that.

RETURNS... We will gladly accept returns within 14 days of delivery if the item is not as described. If it is damaged in transit please also contact the courier too as their insurance should cover any mishaps. However, if you just simply change your mind and there is nothing wrong with the item then we do not accept returns.
